At present, the art of home canning or food preservation is making a comeback in the list of hobbies of people because of the lousy state of economy at present with all the expensive food, the increasing of farmers' markets, and some issues about food safety. One movement, in fact, has been organized due to some peoples' devotion to eating organics and homemade food whose safety they can never doubt. Home canning is now an appealing hobby to people who already have their own backyard gardens of fruit and vegetables. For countries who have many seasonal fruits, home canning is a very popular food preservation technique because through these even seasonal fruits which are preserved can still be enjoyed despite of its off-seasons. One material that will never be gone in the art of home canning is of course the canning jar where the food is preserved. One of the most popular of all the brands of is the brand of Kerr canning jars.

The Kerr canning Jars' history started when Alexander H. Kerr started the Hermetic Fruit Jar Company in the year 1903. Some of the products of the company which became a commercial hit are the Self Sealing Jars and economy Jars which they first released. The Economy Jars were included in the list of the first wide-mouth jars ever created so they became an instant hit because of their easy filling. Later in 1903, the company incorporated the patents of Julius Landsberger in their products by adding a metal lid with a permanently attached gasket as one of the features. Through this addition, the lids became easier to use.

In the year 1915, Mr. Kerr invented again a smaller and flatter metal disk with the same permanent attached gasket. This was used as a lid which is sealed on top of a mason jar with a threaded metal ring used to hold down the lid for the hot water processing. This new invention made the re-using of the canning jars a possibility which is also inexpensive and easy to use with its disposable lids. This is the history of the Kerr canning jars that we still see and use at present with just the two-part lid system improved for more home canning safety. Kerr was also known to have first invented the wide-mouth jars which is said to have only been copied by Ball in his products.
