The history of ball canning jars was started when William Charles Ball and his five brothers, Luis, Lorenzo, Frank, Edmund, and Alexander decided to enter the business of manufacturing wood-jacketed tin cans used for the storage of paints, lard, and oils. In the year 1883, they thought of changing course when they switched to manufacturing tin to glass containers. Three years after, they switched to doing fruit jars after they started manufacturing John L. Mason's Mason jar which became a big hit and served as their key to success. When their business was already starting to pick up, they moved their operations to Muncie, Indiana after their factory in Buffalo was destroyed by a fire. They chose to construct their new site in Muncie because during that time, a supply of natural gas had been discovered there and the city was offering them free.

The Ball Corporation started acquiring smaller companies as well as mass producing and distributing jars across the country because of their successful ball canning jars. At present, the Corporation already operates and owns many other plants of home canning jars in different cities like El Monte, California, Illinois, Mundelein, and North Carolina. They have already stopped selling home canning products and had spun it to Alltrista Corporation or Jarden Corporation to manufacture their Ball glass jars. They now also make Kerr, Golden harvest, and Bernardin canning jars. A sign that they have truly become the leaders of their industry.
